Contemporary Dance

Audition Required: Contact Natalie King for placement questions (natalie.king@gcsu.edu)

Contemporary dance classes offer a dynamic and expressive environment for dancers of all skill levels, focusing on a blend of modern dance techniques such as Horton and Limon. Students will explore a wide range of concepts, from improvisation and personal expression to structured choreography.

Classes typically begin with a warm-up that emphasizes strength, flexibility, and body awareness, focusing on the use of the torso, encouraging dancers to articulate their upper bodies. Key elements include spinal articulations, fortifications, fall and recovery, contraction and release, flat back, lateral, hinge, deep lunges, and floor work that emphasizes the connection between the body and the ground.

This class is for all incoming students ages 12 and up and returning students placed in Ballet levels V, VI, VII, and VIII.
